Chasing the American Dream

Journalism Major

For my multicultural class, the last assignment was to write an opinion editorial. What that consists of is a central problem, why I feel the need to address it, and a possible solution. I wrote about the time in 10th grade when I took a music appreciation class and my peers laughed at me for liking Taylor Swift. For years, it bothered me, and one day I finally realized the problem at the core: the education system that wants to erase the cultures of minority students. As an immigrant myself, I found this to be extremely personal and I'm thankful for my professor, who encouraged me to publish the piece in DU Media for other students to know they are not alone.

See You On the Other Side

This piece was about my high school drama teacher who passed away of cancer. It was my chance to tell his story, one of a teacher who always put his students first and did not get the recognition he deserved until he passed. I was among those students who took advantage of him and it wasn't until he passed that I realized how much of an impact he had on my life.

This essay was published in the second edition of Many Voices, One Du, an anthology of stories hosted by the University of Denver.
